Taylor Swift fans hit with social media ticket scams

Taylor Swift has arrived in Dublin for three sold-out concerts as a part of her record-breaking Eras Tour.

However, many fans have been hit by ticket scams on social media as many scramble to get last-minute tickets.

500,000 people pre-registered for Taylor Swift’s Irish concerts, but only 150,000 fans managed to secure tickets for the Aviva when they went on sale last year.

Despite the low supply of tickets, many social media platforms have been flooded with people trying to sell them.

RTÉ Prime Time investigated these scams by setting up a Facebook profile to join a called Taylor Swift Buy and Sell Dublin, UK and Europe with more than 50,000 members.

Within minutes of posting an appeal asking if anyone was selling tickets, they were met with more than 50 comments from accounts all selling tickets.

None of the sellers offered to meet in person and sent fake screenshots of supposed tickets – with many having spelling mistakes in them or the wrong dates.

One seller refused to show proof of the tickets saying they didn’t want the image to be used by scammers.

Each profile gave a reason they were selling – from being unable to travel to one blaming her husband for cancelling their plans.

The alleged sellers insisted on using PayPal to send the money before transferring the tickets through the Ticketmaster.

At the time ticket transfer was not available.

They also requested using PayPals Friends and Family option which is not covered by the company’s buyer’s protection.

Banks of Ireland issued a waring earlier this week about the scams around tickets to Taylor’s concert urging them to “act Swiftly.”

Fans desperate to buy tickets are being exploited by those selling tickets on an unverifiable platform.
