Ray D'Arcy warned not to turn new radio show into 'graveyard slot' – and keep Joe Duffy's audience

New RTE star Ray D’Arcy has been told he has to hang on to Joe Duffy’s listeners by bosses.

Chiefs are depending on the former Today FM star to keep the 382,000 audience of Liveline, which goes out directly before his new show.

A source said: “On any other station, an afternoon slot would be a graveyard slot with few listeners — but because of Liveline, RTE Radio One gets a huge boost during the day.

“RTE want Ray to hang on to Liveline listeners — but it’s a tricky business because the Joe Duffy audience is very much older than the audience Ray had on Today FM.”

Sources said that the new show, which replaces Derek Mooney, will be more upbeat and like his old morning show.

An insider told the Irish Sun: “Ray’s new show will capture the spark of his Today FM programme.

“It will have Ray concentrating on his core passions, like exercise, cycling, good food. And all done with Ray engaging his audience, which he did so well on Today FM.”
