Demi Lovato speaks out on mental health at DNC

Demi Lovato gave a rousing speech at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, before performing her hit Confident for the crowd.

Demi called for greater awareness, education, and support for mental illness in the United States. The singer referenced her own experience in a treatment centre for her bipolar disorder and anorexia – and called herself one of the lucky ones.

“Like millions of Americans, I am living with mental illness,” she said. “But I’m lucky; I had the resources and support to get treatment at a top facility.”

She continued, “Unfortunately too many Americans from all walks of life don’t get help, either because they fear the stigma or cannot afford treatment. Untreated mental illness can lead to devastating consequences including suicide, substance abuse, and long-term medical issues.”

Demi urged the audience to educate themselves and end the stigma. “We can do better. Every one of us can make a difference by getting educated on this epidemic and its frightening statistics, and by breaking the stigma,” she said.

“This is not about politics. It’s simply the right thing to do.”

Demi then performed her empowering hit Confident, and the Twitterverse reacted with pride and support.

Demi herself later took to Twitter to express her support for Hillary Clinton.

Other famous personalities spoke and performed at the DNC on Monday, such as Eva Longoria, Michelle Obama, Sara Silverman, and Paul Simon.
