Hollywood actors Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt have opened up about being “typecasted” in their early career.
The stars of the two biggest blockbusters in 2023- Barbie and Oppenheimer, have revealed that their success did not happen overnight.
Ryan began his career in showbusiness at the age of 12 acting in the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse alongside a host of famous faces including Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera.
Emily was scouted by a talent agent after her performance in a school play at her UK boarding school, Hurtwood House- she began working immediately after she graduated at 18.
Explaining why he took such dark roles after his stint as a “mousketeer,” Ryan told Times Magazine: “Well, it’s more just trying to have a career, and wanting to keep my healthcare.”
“Because, once you do something, there’s a sense that’s the only thing you can do. So, yes, I’d think, how do I escape this box?”
“It goes back to The Mickey Mouse Club. I thought about how I could do something to not just be associated with that. A lot of Disney kids go through that.”
“So I found this film, The Believer, about a Jewish Nazi [2001], and that gift-wrapped me a career. But then, I was only offered very dark things, because that was all the work I could get.”
“So, when the director Nick Cassavetes said there was this romantic lead in The Notebook, it gave me another shot.”
“He said he is a romantic lead, but f***ing crazy. He writes a girl a letter every day for 365 days and builds a house that they went to once.”
“And Nick said, ‘You’re crazy, you can do this.’ And I was like, erm, ‘Thanks?’ But then, suddenly, I’m just the guy from The Notebook. So I do Drive”
Drive is an action/thriller which was released in 2011 and follows a stuntman and getaway driver [Ryan] who falls in love with a woman married to a criminal.
Emily revealed that she too has felt typecasted during her time in Hollywood.
She told the outlet: “After The Devil Wears Prada [2006], I was offered every single acerbic British bitch going.”
However, the actress revealed that she is now in a privileged position where she can put her family first.
Last year, the mother-of-two announced that she was taking a year off from acting, to spend time with her daughters, Hazel, 9, and Violet, 7, and her husband, the actor/director John Krasinski.
