Colin Farrell: ‘Fatherhood has enriched my life – but increased my anxiety’

The actor was known for his party boy ways when he was younger

Colin Farrell has admitted that fatherhood has changed him.

The actor said previously that he was happy to star in his new film, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, because it was a film his children could actually watch.

“[Fatherhood] just enriched my life and I assume it’s given me a greater degree of not only anxiety, but depth and compassion,” he said.

“It changes you, but you have to decide to let it change you.”

The Dubliner welcomed his first son, James, in 2003 with now ex-girlfriend Kim Bordenave before welcoming his second son, Henry, in 2013 with his Ondine co-star Alicja Bachleda-Curus.

“When my first son was born, I said, ‘It’s not gonna change me,'” he said at a press junket for his upcoming film, reported by the Entertainment Tonight.

“Like, that’s what a 3-month-old boy needs – a 21-year-old drunk friend – but I thought I was going to be that cool dad.

“James was about two or three by the time I went, ‘Why am I trying to not let this inform how my life is lived now? I should allow it to change me.'”

Colin gushed about his sons and how they go through life, revealing how fascinated he is by how they grow.

“My favourite thing is just the honour of observing these two guys figure out their lives and try to navigate what is, at times, [a treacherous world.]

“Kids can be so mean and human beings are emotional, sensitive creatures, so it’s fascinating to observe these two guys navigate their way through friends and enemies and schoolyard politics,” he added.

“It’s crazy, man. It’s terrifying, but that’s the best part – to be there for them and try not to get in their way and mess them up too much.”
