Fashion Fix: The Golden Globes, BAFTA's, Oscars and the IFTA's – our award season style predictions

With the Golden Globes taking place this Sunday and the BAFTA’s around the corner – it can only mean one thing, that award season is firmly upon us.

From overly-emotional acceptance speeches, hilarious hosts and star-studded after parties, we love award season at Goss.ie.

And one integral part of the next few weeks is the fashion.

This year the Irish will be very present on the red carpets, from Laura Whitmore heading to the BAFTA’s as well as Allen Leech, to Michael Fassbender expected at A-list events, we’ll have our eye on our top stars.

The Irish will also be represented in the form of designs, Simone Rocha is one of the top fashion designers tipped to be dressing Hollywood stars this season.

Eager with anticipation, we sat down with Irish stylist and Xpose regular Lorna Weightman who revealed her predictions for red carpet fashion and which Irish designers to watch out for this season.

Looking out for trends, Lorna emphasised a huge revival of the 1970’s on Spring Summer 2015 catwalks, adding that she is hoping to “see more than just floral prints and pastels colours” on the red carpet.

“I’d like to see that kind of bohemian relaxed kind of vibe that we see all over the catwalk emerge on the red carpet,” she told Goss.ie.

“Sienna Miller always has this inherently bohemian style about her that I hope will channel that.”

Lorna said we will most definitely “see more paired back looks” over the next few weeks with an emphasis on minimal and “a lot of block colours” adding that “we’re gong to see black, it’s always a given.”

Sarah Greene has been queen of the paired back look in 2014, after Vogue editor Anna Wintour invited her to the Met Gala and the Cork star was nominated for a Tony.

The girlfriend of Hobbit star Aidan Turner is expected back on the red carpet this season.

And 2014 was definitely the year for Irish fashion designers with fans in Keira Knightly, Saoirse Ronan and Chloe Moretz, Lorna said we’re sure to see Simone Rocha’s designs come to life during this awards show season.

Always one for championing Irish fashion, Saoirse Ronan rocked Simone on the 2013 IFTA red carpet.

Saoirse will be back on the red carpets next month as her film The Grand Budapest Hotel is up for 11 nominations at the BAFTA’s.

Another fashion designer tipped for the red carpet spotlight is Don O’Neill, who has already dressed Oprah for the Oscars.

The Kerryman is a huge name in couture circles having dressed Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood and even Ireland’s first lady, Sabina Higgins in his bespoke gowns.

TV stylist Lorna explained how he “does red carpet timeless glamour and elegance so superbly” adding “I can see him dressing somebody like Cate Blanchett.”

After all the silk and sequins, we asked our fashion expert who she’s most looking forward to seeing on the red carpet.

“Felicity Jones” said Lorna explaining “she’s got this elfin look about her, really petite dainty features and she dresses really beautifully for her age and her style.”

Felicity will be walking the red carpets this season for her role in The Theory of Everything which has been tipped for Oscar glory.

Staying closer to home, the Lorna named TV presenter Laura Whitmore as one of her favourite style stars.

The red-carpet regular was in the press for all the wrong reasons last awards season because of the “shambles” that was the IFTA’s.

But the Bray native always kills it when it comes to fashion. The MTV star will be on a host of red carpets this season including attending the BAFTA’s next month, and last year she presented the pre-show, where she interviewed A-listers.

But it’s not all about the ladies this season, one Irish actor who will be all over the red carpets in the coming weeks is Allen Leech.

The Downton Abbey star will be joining co-stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley as their movie The Imitation Game has bagged numerous nominations both at the BAFTA’s and the Golden Globes.

But we also have our own award show to look forward to. The IFTA’s will take place this April, and although it won’t be filmed for RTE, we will still get the red carpet access to all your favourite stars.

Last year Amy Huberman showed off her post-baby body in this Helen Coady beige gown.

But until we’re back on the IFTA red carpet all that’s left to tune in to the UK and US award shows and watch A-listers stroll down the red carpet in their luxurious gowns.

We’ll be tuning in for the style highlights and of course fashion faux pas.

Kicking off the season in style the Golden Globes will be live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The BAFTA’s take place on February 8th, and The Oscars will air on February 22nd.
