Alison Canavan: 'I would never say the days of depression are behind me – but I'm stronger than EVER'

Model Alison Canavan has admitted she doesn’t ever feel her days of depression are gone – but is stronger than ever.

The Dubliner was diagnosed with crippling post-natal depression after the birth of her son James in 2010.

But four years later, Alison said: “I would never say the days of depression are behind me. I work very hard at staying well.

“I went through a period of going, ‘Life is unfair’ as I had to work at staying well, whereas others stay well normally.”

The Upbeat FM presenter, 36, writes a diary every day and exercises weekly in a bid to keep the demons at bay.

She added: “I’m stronger now than I’ve ever been and a completely different person to who I was four years ago.

“The road to success is never easy and anyone who thinks it is must be one in a million.

“There have been several times in the last couple of years where I have broken down and thought, ‘Is this worth it?’

“All the work I was doing wasn’t paying off but it does eventually.”

Now Alison is studying to be a nutritional therapist, and hopes to be able to help others suffering from depression with diet changes which could help their mood.

And Alison told the Sunday Mirror she would like another child – but needs to find a man.

“I would love more children, if you can find me a fella. There are no guys out there, its a disaster. I have resigned myself to the fact if it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be,” she said.

“I know I’m busy but I would love to meet someone who understands how busy I am, gets what I do and how I have had to pick myself up from nothing when I came home and rebuild an entire career. I don’t want to rely on anybody.

“I’m looking for a bit of company, just to share all the trials and tribulations of life, that’s all I want from a partner.

“I have a beautiful son, my career is going very well and I’m very lucky and I just want a partner to share all this with.”
