Sticky situation: Richard Branson opens up on U2 paying his Irish court bill

Richard Branson has revealed that he’s delighted to have played a role in Ireland’s shift to becoming a more open minded society.

The Virgin mogul recalled the time when he was called before a court after the Irish Family Planning Association were fined for selling condoms in his Virgin Megastores in 1991.

“I remember all the Virgin Megastores in Ireland went down really well with young people, who appreciated our different way of doing things,” he said.

In trouble: Richard was landed in court for selling condoms

“But my abiding memory from our flagship Dublin store is appearing in court for selling condoms in the shop.”

“This was in the early Nineties before selling contraception was legal in Ireland. I testified on behalf of the Irish Family Planning Association, which was convicted and fined,” he told The Irish Sun.

Luckily for the media mogul, a famous rock group stepped in the pay the bill.

“A certain rock band known as U2 stepped in to pay the fine,” he said.
