Laura Whitmore on Strictly injury: ‘I was so distraught and upset’

The presenter had to pull out of last week's show because of damaging her ankle

Laura Whitmore has admitted that she was left distraught and upset after as she was unable to dance on last weekend’s Strictly Come Dancing.

The Bray native was preparing all week to dance the jive with her partner Giovanni Pernice, but was forced to pull out last minute due to an ankle injury.

“I was so distraught and upset. More than I thought I would be,” she said.

The injury was a result of the presenter continuously overusing the muscle and repeating one particular dance step.

“I was told by the physiotherapist to stop putting pressure on my foot straight away as so much fluid had built up and there was a risk if I kept going I would tear the ligament,” she wrote for her column in Glamour magazine.

“An ultrasound on Friday confirmed the swelling had built up and the excessive fluid was causing me a lot pain but fortunately the ligament wasn’t torn.

“We discussed the option of an injection of a strong pain killer and for them just to let me dance on Saturday but I was advised this wasn’t the best course of action. ”

Ultimately, Laura was unable to dance for the weekend’s show and said she was allowed to miss one show – “but only one.”

“For me the option of not dancing WASN’T an option. If I didn’t dance, I would let everyone down, including myself, and Giovanni who had choreographed a beautiful routine.

“On the Friday afternoon, after seeing a doctor and a physiotherapist, I was advised to rest and given my injury that I should not dance on Saturday night,” she revealed.

“It’s not the decision I wanted but I want to thank the brilliant medical team and the production team for looking after me so well.

“We all put so much into our routines and we are like a family. You’re allowed to miss one show if the doctor says you are not physically fit to dance – but only one.”

The 31-year-old is back training today and will be dancing again this weekend on Strictly Come Dancing from 6.45pm on BBC1.
