Oliver Callan: 'There's nothing wrong with making fun of Michael D. Higgins'

Oliver Callan rejects the label of “toxic bully” and thinks making fun of the President is perfectly acceptable.

The comedian regularly satirizes Michael D. Higgins, most notably for his height and believes it is ridiculous for people to label it bullying.

He said: “Obviously in comedy you use certain gimmicks and tools to get laughter. I don’t focus exclusively on the President and I don’t exclusively focus on the president’s height.”

He added: “I haven’t said that the President is too small to carry out his duties or gain the respect of the people. The child in us thinks gosh he is hilariously small.

“Satire mentions the elephant in the room, that’s what Charlie Hebdo has done and that’s what I’m doing as well. I don’t make fun of people who are vulnerable or who don’t have the means to defend themselves.”

The Dublin comedian admitted he doesn’t think it’s possible to bully someone in such a powerful position.

“How can you bully a President? Someone who 1.2 million people voted for?” he told RTE Radio One.

Humour: Oliver thinks Michael D. Higgins doesn’t take himself too seriously | VIPIRELAND.COM

“The President is obviously a famous minister for the Arts, if I thought for a second that the president is crying late at night because I’m making fun of his height, I wouldn’t be doing it” he revealed.

“He’s a man who’s well familiar with the arts, I don’t think he takes life that seriously.”
