Alan Hughes claims TV3 is on the up – as RTÉ shows in jeopardy

The presenter gives his opinion on TV3's rival station's shake-up

Alan Hughes has claimed TV3 is on the up, as more and more news comes out about RTE outsourcing and cutting shows.

In a statement, RTE revealed that it would be outsourcing it’s young people’s programmes, which has sparked fears that many shows are set to be axed – but there are no fears for Alan, who has just signed a two-year contract with TV3.

“At the moment, we’ve just been taken over by Virgin so everything is really positive in TV3,” he said.

The presenter admitted that it’s an exciting time for all in TV3 with popular soaps like Emmerdale and Coronation Street coming back to the station.

“We’ve got the soaps back and it’s a really exciting time and I am delighted to be there,” he told the Herald.

“I’ve just signed a new two-year contract so that’s all finalised so I’ll be on your screens, like me or hate me, for another two years.”

Alan also spoke about RTE’s decision to outsource children’s TV programmes, and said that it might not be a bad thing for the station – because the shows won’t change too much under new management.

“I don’t know whether things are going to change. Just because they outsource the programmes doesn’t mean the programmes are going to change.

“The staff presenters are the staff presenters but when you outsource a department, it might mean you get better programming.

“I know it’s sad and it’s an uncertain time for presenters. It could be a good thing, we’ll have to wait and see,” he added.
