Oireachtas Committee confirm Dee Forbes will be asked to give evidence when ‘medically appropriate’

The Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee have confirmed Dee Forbes will be asked to give evidence when it is “medically appropriate”.

The Committee is held a hearing at Leinster House on Thursday, to discuss RTÉ’s ongoing payments scandal.

Earlier this week, a spokesperson for the former Director General revealed she wouldn’t be in attendance due to “health reasons”.

At the beginning of the session, the Chair of the Public Accounts Committee Brian Stanley said he wanted to put witnesses “on notice”.

It will ask Dee Forbes to attend when it is “medically appropriate” for her to do so.

The Public Accounts Committee will be asking the Dáil to approve this.

In her opening statement, RTÉ Board Chair Siún Ní Raghallaigh said: “I, and the board, would also urge Dee Forbes to appear before this committee when she is able to do so.”

RTÉ was plunged into chaos last week when it was revealed that Ryan Tubridy’s earnings were publicly understated by €345,000 over the last six years.

The issue was identified during a routine audit of RTÉ’s 2022 accounts, prompting an independent review of the matter.

Last Thursday, the RTÉ Board issued an apology over the error, and later Ryan also apologised for not questioning RTÉ over his published earnings.

The scandal resulted in the suspension of RTÉ’s Director General Dee Forbes, who later resigned from her role.

RTÉ’s Chief Financial Officer Richard Collins claimed Dee Forbes told him that €75,000 invoices were for consultancy services Noel Kelly had offered to the broadcaster about restructuring some of its operation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The €75,000 invoices were actually for Ryan to reflect the deal with Renault.
