Carey Mulligan reveals she was ‘childhood pen pals’ with husband Marcus Mumford years before they wed

Carey Mulligan has shared a sweet memory of being pen pals with her husband Marcus Mumford when they were kids.

The actress spoke about meeting her future husband when they were kids at a summer camp.

She and the musician fell out of touch and reconnected 10 years later, eventually getting married in 2012.

The Saltburn star recalled the story on Good Morning Britain, saying: “‘We ended up going to the same summer camp when we were kids so we became pen pals after and that’s how we kept in touch, we didn’t have phones!”

“We used to fax a bit when fax machines were cool! We need to get kids back doing the pen pal thing again. It’s a good thing.”

“Then there was about 10 years when we lost touch and then we reconnected,” she added.

Carey got engaged to the Mumford & Sons frontman in August 2011 after just five months of dating.

While on the Smartless podcast, she revealed her first impressions of her husband when they first met when she was 12 and he was 10.

She said: “I wrote in my diary that he was the nicest, the kindest person I’d ever met and I gave him 9 1/2 out of 10.”

“I also wrote in my diary that he definitely wasn’t boyfriend material. I mean not that I’d ever had a boyfriend at that time. But I decided that he was not it,” she added.

The couple share children, Evelyn, eight, and Wilfred, five, together.

The pair also welcomed their third child in September 2023, but have yet to reveal the baby’s name.
