U2 has shocked the world by releasing their highly-anticipated new album for free on iTunes.

The Dublin rockers sent out Songs Of Innocence – which contains 11 new tracks – to more than a billion users of the Apple service.

They will be releasing it physically in stores by Island Records on October 13, 2014.

U2 claim Songs of Innocence – which is their first album in five years – is their “most personal work to date”.

Bono said: “We wanted to make a very personal album,. Let’s try to figure out why we wanted to be in a band, the relationships around the band, our friendships, our lovers, our family.

“The whole album is first journeys — first journeys geographically, spiritually, sexually. And that’s hard. But we went there.”

It is produced by Danger Mouse, along with Paul Epworth, Ryan Tedder, Declan Gaffney and Flood.

As per tradition Dave Fanning was given the first play of the album on his RTE 2FM show this evening.

Earlier, Goss.ie told how Simon Cowell wants U2 to make their first TV appearance with the music on the X Factor.
