Saoirse Ronan opens up about body image: 'It felt good to have curves'

Saoirse Ronan has revealed she enjoyed having a curvier figure for her latest movie Brooklyn.

The actress stars alongside Domhnall Gleeson and Emory Cohen, in the film adaptation of Colm Tóibin’s novel, which follows Saoire’s character migrate to New York in the 1950s.

Speaking on The Late Late Show Saoirse revealed she preferred wearing clothes from that time period because the fashion was more suited to curves.

Fashion: Saoirse says style is important for body image | BRIAN MCEVOY

“Fashion was just so great for women back then, because it really reflected kind of the healthy woman’s figure.

“It actually showed me how important fashion and style is when it comes to body image security in your body and things like that.

“Because it felt good to have curves and for women to have bums because you had clothes that kind of reflected that.”

Meanwhile the Carlow native admitted she is enjoying the current Oscar buzz surrounding the new movie.

“It is nice and it is lovely,” she said. “But the good thing about having that sort of discussion around it now, touch wood, is that when you’ve been on both sides of it and had both perspectives.

“It’s great and everything works out well when it comes to buzz but then nothing comes of it but the film is still great and you love it. The talk of an Oscar has helped me realise all the elements that go into that whole world.”
