What is orange wine? Everything you need to know about the trending summer drink

Orange wine is quickly becoming the latest beverage trend ahead of summer 2022.

The orange coloured wine has taken social media by storm, with the #orangewine hashtag reaching over 3.5 million views on TikTok.

So, what is orange wine? The drink is made in a similar way to white wine – but the deepened colour and flavour differences come as a result of leaving the skins and seeds on the white grapes during the production process.

After the juice is fermented, it creates a deep amber-hued coloured liquid.

The winemaking technique used for orange wine has been used for thousands of years, and is thought to have originated from wine-producing regions in Georgia before it was repopularised years later in Slovenia and Italy.

And what does orange wine taste like? Despite the name, it doesn’t actually taste like oranges. It tends to have sour and nutty undertones and a rich aroma due to oxidation.

It is more resemblant in taste and smell to white wine but has the body and structure of red wine.

Orange wine is best paired with bold flavours, such as strong cheeses, meats such as pork or lamb and spicy curries.
