McDonald’s opens first ever spin-off restaurant

McDonalds opened their first ever spin-off restaurant, CosMc’s, in Bollingbrook, Illinois this week.

The famous fast-food chain plans to open a further 10 CosMc locations by the end of next year, with nine of those opening in Texas.

McDonald’s will use these 10 restaurants as a test, to decide if it should expand the small-format chain to a bigger scale.

The name for the new restaurant, CosMc’s, comes from the McDonaldland mascot who featured in the advertisements between the late 1980s and early 1990s.

CosMc was the name of a McDonald’s craving alien from outer space.

The company’s sales exceeded targets this year by 14% after the launch of their Grimace Birthday Meal, garnered huge success.

The meal deal, which included an Insta-friendly purple milkshake went viral instantly on social media and had customers posting about their love for the meal and the McDonaldland character.

The fast-food giant, revealed it’s plans for the CosMc spin off in July on the social media platform, X.

They revealed no further details about it until photos of the Bollingbrook location started going viral on X earlier this week.

McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski told investors: “This is a $100 billion category growing faster than the rest of the [informal eating-out segment] and with superior margins.”

In a video also shown to investors, a narrator said: “When 3 p.m. hits, and you need a boost, take a trip to CosMc’s,” a narrator said in a video shown to investors Wednesday.

McDonald’s specifically set out to create a brand that could sell customizable drinks and coffee popular in the afternoon segment, with a menu that includes old favorites such as M&M McFlurries, and Egg McMuggins.

It is also introducing new items such as pretzel bites and Churro Frappes.
