Republic Of Telly set to be axed as RTE cuts more shows

The sketch show isn't the only show in trouble

Republic Of Telly is rumoured to be the next show for RTE to cut.

A spokesperson for the broadcaster revealed previously that they will be outsourcing their children’s TV programmes – and has led to some staff protesting, which could mean the popular Late Late Toy Show is in jeopardy.

Insiders at the station claim that the last episode of the series, which aired this week, could be the final one ever.

It’s said that RTE will make a loss of up to €20million by the end of 2016 and other shows like Reality Bites are also said to be cut to save on costs.

“It’s easier to axe a show like Republic of Telly because many of the people working on it are freelance writers and actors,” a source told the Irish sun.

“Shows made largely by freelancers are much easier to cut than those made by staff. Freelancers don’t need to be paid redundancy either,” another source said.

The news comes after Channel Controller of RTE One and RTE Two Adrian Lynch admitted that they will not be cutting Fair City after fears it would be outsourced.
