Comedian Jason Byrne insists BBC didn't give his sitcom a chance to survive

Comedian Jason Byrne has revealed he felt like he was being “constantly punched” after his BBC sitcom flopped.

The Dublin TV star believes Father Figure wasn’t given any chance by the UK State broadcaster – who expected a new Mrs Brown’s Boys.

And the 42-year-old compares it to the beginning of Saving Private Ryan, admitting: “It came out and in seconds it was dead on the beach.”

He said: “They put it out really late at night but it was for families. The critics just buried it.

“The thing just never got a chance. It was like the opening scenes of Saving Private Ryan – that’s what happened. It came out and in seconds it was dead on the beach.

“The guy who was in charge of it moved to a different department and once your boss leaves you’ve got nobody to look after you.”

And Jason – who now has a new TV3 show, Jason Byrne’s Snaptastic Show – believes the BBC expected too much after the success of Mrs Brown’s Boys and it “didn’t get its time”.

He added: “For me all it needed was more writers and a few changes and it would have been back on track.

“But when Brendan O’Carroll’s show went out that just went massive straight away and I think they were expecting the same.”

However Jason told the Irish Mirror that returning to his comedy roots helped him survive.

He added: “I am a live stand-up and that never falls on its arse… Stand-up keeps me going and I know how good I am at that. You have to know how good you are to do it.”
