Ryan revealed that he heard Gay’s news as home as he was listening to Lyric FM on Sunday – a normal habit of his.

“There I was sitting in my kitchen listening to Gay on his programme on a Sunday, as I do,” he said on his RTE 1 radio show.

“He said it in very casual terms and was very understated in how he spoke about it.”

Finally, Ryan wished Gay and his family well in these hard times saying, “Look at the front covers of the papers today. I wish him and the family well and may he receive the best of care.”

The 82-year-old veteran RTE presenter told listeners his health news on his Lyric FM show on Sunday.

“I shall not be with our listeners on this day next week. Have to go to hospital this week. They think they may have discovered a bit of cancer in the prostate and they think it may have moved up into my back.”

Gay pulled at the nation’s heartstrings by adding “It’s my turn now. Many, many people much worse off. Thank you for your good wishes.”
