Priest files complaint against Rubberbandits’ Blindboy Boatclub

A Kerry priest was not impressed with the artist's words about the church

A priest has filed a complaint against the Rubberbandits’ Blindboy Boatclub.

The artist is accused by Fr. Kevin McNamara over the “ridiculing of the Eucharist” on The Late Late Show.

During a debate on the Friday night programme, Blindboy referred to the Eucharist as “haunted bread.”

Haunted bread: Fr. Kevin was hurt by Blindboy’s “ridiculing” | RTE

In his parish newsletter, Fr. Kevin wrote that he was “hurt beyond words” at hearing the host described as “haunted bread” on “the so-called flagship chat show.”

The priest, who is from Co. Clare where he is hugely popular and outspoken, said the phrase which he found so offensive was endorsed by the show’s presenter, Ryan Tubridy.

“During a discussion about whether religious practice long in decline, might be on the rise, comedian David Chambers, who performs as Blindboy Boatclub in the comedy duo The Rubberbandits, said that young people attending midnight mass at Christmas were ‘not going there for haunted bread, but because it was a family event,'” he said in his newsletter.

“Presenter Ryan Tubridy said he thought the phrase ‘haunted bread’ was a ‘great expression.’

“I have made a complaint to the Broadcasting Authority.”
