Bryan Dobson insists he didn’t know that Sharon Ní Bheoláin was earning less than him

The Six One news presenter has spoken out about the pay gap

Bryan Dobson has insisted that he didn’t know that Sharon Ní Bheoláin was earning less than him.

Back in July, Sharon revealed that she was paid between €60,000 and €80,000 less than her co-anchor on RTÉ’s Six One News – and the revelation sparked a larger gender pay gap discussion.

However, Bryan has finally spoken out, and said that he didn’t know there was a difference in their pay until it was made public.

“I don’t decide what I get paid. First, I didn’t know what Sharon earned until it was published,” Bryan told the RTÉ Guide.

“And I certainly don’t see any justification for the disparity between what we earn.”

Meanwhile, last month it was revealed that Bryan would be leaving the Six One News at the end of October, as he’s joining the line-up on RTÉ Radio One’s Morning Ireland.

Although his new project will be a big change, as he worked on the Six One News for 21 years, Bryan is looking forward to the challenge.

“The great thing now is that I get a change of direction but it’s still in RTE so not as daunting.

“It’s a challenge and I need it. I’ve just turned 57 and a lot of my friends are thinking of retiring or making room for the next generation. The mid fifties is an interesting stage and this is an ideal time for a new opportunity,” he added.
