The Coronas' Danny O'Reilly found writing an entire album about Laura Whitmore split 'really therapeutic'

Danny O’Reilly has revealed writing an entire album about his breakup with Laura Whitmore was “really therapeutic”.

The Coronas star was left heartbroken after ending things with the MTV presenter in 2012 – turning to music to get him through the pain.

“The lyrics were really therapeutic. I could never write a song about politics — it’s not something I’m comfortable with. Writing about [the break-up] was good for me,” he said.

Too open: Now Danny plans to keep quiet on relationships

“I’ve always been an honest songwriter. Our first single [San Diego Song] was written when I was 21 and sleeping all day and drinking all night. That’s what it’s about.

“At the time people said to me, ‘Are you sure you want to put all of that down in writing?’ I never hesitated. That’s the way I am.”

The 28-year-old said it has “always been natural” to open up emotionally – as he does on new record The Long Way – and feels people only care because Laura is famous.

“Everyone who knows me will tell you I’m a sensitive soul. The lads in the band have witnessed some of my emotional moments over the years, especially with a few whiskies on board. It’s always been natural to me, to be honest,” he said.

“Our first album, Heroes or Ghosts, was a break-up record too, pretty much. Nobody cared — because I was breaking up with somebody nobody knew.”

But Danny tells the Sunday Times he is partly to blame himself for opening up too much about Laura.

“I was a little too open about my personal life — too willing to talk about it. Maybe that’s why the papers felt they could talk about it too,” he said.

“With future relationships, I definitely won’t be mentioning names — saying this or that person is great.”

The Coronas new album is their first to be released in the UK, after they signed to Island Records earlier this year.
