Revealed: Bono underwent FIVE hours of surgery for bike crash – after bones tore through his SKIN

U2 star Bono had to undergo five hours of surgery after injuring himself in a bike accident.

The Dublin singer was injured while cycling through Central Park in New York – with further details of the crash now emerging.

Doctors had to insert three metal plates and 18 screws to repair fractures to both his face and arm.

The 54-year-old was rushed to hospital after suffering injuries including a “facial fracture involving the orbit of his eye”.

He also suffered three fractures of his left shoulder blade and a fracture of his left humerus bone in his upper arm, with his bone shattering in six different places and tearing through his skin.

Orthopaedic trauma surgeon Dean Lorich said: “He was taken emergently to the operating room where the elbow was washed out and debrided.

“A nerve trapped in the break was moved and the bone was repaired with three metal plates and 18 screws.”

Originally U2 described it as a “cycling spill”, with doctors now stating he will need intensive and progressive therapy but will make a full recovery.

The band have been forced to cancel a planned week as the house band on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
