UPDATED: RTE confirm Nicky Byrne's Million Euro Challenge has been axed

RTE have confirmed that Winning Streak will continue it’s summer run until Christmas in place of Nicky Byrne’s show.

The long-running RTE game show with Marty Whelan and Sinead Kennedy was sensationally replaced by Nicky’s series in January.

“RTÉ confirms that Winning Streak will continue into Autumn in place of Nicky Byrne’s Million Euro Challenge,” said a spokesperson from the broadcaster.

Winning Streak has consistently drawn in big ratings while The Million Euro challenge plummeted to as low as 165,000 in its prime time Saturday night slot.

“It’s no secret that RTE and the National lottery are unhappy with the performance of Million Euro Challenge,” a source said.

“It had a great presenter and a talented and experienced production team but it just didn’t appeal to enough viewers.”

“The show could be completely revamped or even replaced between now and January – and it’s not clear if Nicky Byrne wants to return in his role next season either,” they told The Star.

RTE have extended Winning Streak’s original summer run until Christmas and it will form a key part of their Autumn TV schedule.

It comes after many viewers had criticised The Million Euro Challenge for its confusing rules and giving out little in cash prizes.
