Star Wars set to film on Malin Head

Having previously shot on Skellig Michael, Star Wars’ next instalment of the rebooted trilogy is now set to film in Malin Head in Donegal.

New reports made by The Derry Journal have emerged revealing the scenic area had been scouted by LucasFilm and Disney as a possible film location – with a number of locals B&Bs and hotels booked for the month of May.

According to the Irish Times, location scouts secretly visited Malin Head, which is located on the Inishown Peninsula, last October and have hinted it will be used as a location for Luke Skywalker’s hideout during his time in self-exile.

North bound: Star Wars’ next episode is set to film in Malin Head

Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Joe McHugh, confirmed that talks are in the advanced stage for shooting scenes in the area, which is the most northerly point of Ireland.

“There are still a few things to be sorted with the department including foreshore licenses but I’m confident that will be taken care of,” he told the Irish Times.

“This will be a massive opportunity to promote the area globally and I would welcome it. I would also see it as a superb opportunity to highlight the Wild Atlantic Way and all it has to offer.”

The latest location news comes after it was revealed episode VIII in the film series will shoot on Ceann Sibéal.
