Gay Byrne heading back to work just weeks after heart attack

Gay Byrne has revealed that he is heading back to work, just weeks after being hospitalised with a heart attack.

The legendary broadcaster will be heading back to radio on Lyric FM this weekend and joked that some people will probably tune in to see if he will die on air.

“There’ll be some people tuning in hoping I die on the spot. Oh, the excitement of it,” he said.

Comeback: Gay is getting back to work

“I don’t see doing a radio show as particularly stressful but the transmitter valves at Lyric might not be able for all the new listeners.,” he told the Irish Sun.

However, not everyone wants Gay to return to work and his medics have advised that he should be taking it easy.

“I am getting too much opposition from the medics and my own wife. They, not me, reckon it would be too much and are emphasising that part of my treatment is taking it easy,” he admitted.

The Dubliner opened up about the morning of his heart attack and revealed he was lucky that his daughter and her husband were with him at the time.

“Something suddenly came over me at 6am the next morning. Fortunately I had my daughter and her husband staying with us, and they were up like a flash,” he explained.

“Soon the Fire brigade ambulance was with us. I can’t speak highly enough of those ambulance men. They were terrific.”
