Radio presenter Lottie Ryan has opened up about her dad Gerry, the day before his fifth anniversary.

The 2FM star will join her family at a remembrance mass tomorrow and Lottie admitted she always feels sad around his anniversary.

“It’s taken me a long, long time because it’s not natural to talk about bereavement unless you are talking to members of your family,” Lottie admitted.

“I’m getting into my groove with my own career so it’s something I’m comfortable with now. Dad’s anniversary is always sad but we celebrate his life as well.

“We get together and chat, tell stories. There are so many good memories for the family,” she told the Irish Sun.

And Lottie thanked RTE for the Gerry Ryan memorial they unveiled last October.

“We were so grateful to RTE for the memorial. I think it was important for dad’s colleagues to have a place to remember him in RTE.

“I’m delighted dad is finally getting the credit he deserved. I always thought my dad brought magic to the radio, if some people are only recognising that now, that’s cool — I welcome all this positivity about dad.”

Meanwhile Lottie said she knows her dad would be proud of his children’s success in the industry.

“Dad would be singing about my radio show at the top of his lungs. Rex’s acting career has really well and Bonnie’s singing.

“Dad would love hearing all this because nothing was more important to him than us kids.

Lottie made the comments while promoting the HB Hazelbrook  Ice Cream Fundays Campaign in support of Down Syndrome Ireland.

2015 is the 13th year that HB Hazelbrook Farm has supported the campaign, helping to raise more than €3million for Down Syndrome Ireland over that period.

The campaign is a vital source of funding for the development of Down Syndrome Ireland’s nationwide support services to their members, families and organisations, which are in huge demand and under resourced.
