Pierce Brosnan apologises for controversial ad campaign

Pierce Brosnan has apologised to the people of India for the use of his image in an ad campaign for pan masala, a breath freshener linked to cancer.

The Navan native appeared in an ad for Pan Bahar where he plays an elegant and charming agent similar to his James Bond character.

The actor said that he was “deeply shocked and saddened” that he was used to promote a product linked to the illness.

The 63-year-old admitted that he was distressed to learn of the company using his image to promote a harmful product having lost his wife and daughter to cancer.

“As a man who has spent decades championing women’s healthcare and environmental protection, I was distressed to learn of Pan Bahar’s unauthorized and deceptive use of my image to endorse their range of pan masala products,” a statement obtained by People Magazine read.

“I would never have entered into an agreement to promote a product in India that is dangerous to one’s health.

“Having endured, in my own personal life, the loss of my first wife and daughter as well as numerous friends to cancer, I am fully committed to supporting women’s healthcare and research programs that improve human health and alleviate suffering.

“I shall endeavour to rectify this matter. In the meantime, please accept my sincerest and heartfelt apologies to all whom I have offended.”
