Brooklyn Nine-Nine confirmed for 2021 return

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been confirmed for an eight season in 2021.

The hit show’s official Twitter account announced the news following the NBC Autumn 2020 line-up announcement.

The announcement followed concern among fans regarding the future of the show, after producers decided to “rethink” how to write a police comedy following the death of George Floyd in May.

George Floyd’s death sparked protests across the US and around the world, after a white police officer held his knee to his neck for over eight minutes.

In light of the killing, actor Terry Crews explained that producers scrapped previously written episodes in order to rethink the entire season: “Dan Goor had four new episodes all ready to go and they just threw them in the trash.”

“We have to start over. Right now we don’t know which direction it’s going to go in,” he told Deadline at the time.

“We hope through this we’re going to make something that will be truly groundbreaking this year. We have an opportunity here, and we plan to use it in the best way possible.”

Andy Samberg, who plays Jake Peralta in the show, told PEOPLE: “We’re taking a step back, and the writers are all rethinking how we’re going to move forward, as well as the cast.

“We’re all in touch and kind of discussing how you make a comedy show about police right now, and if we can find a way of doing that that we all feel morally okay about.”

He added: “I know that we’ll figure it out, but it’s definitely a challenge, so we’ll see how it goes.”
