Aidan Turner defends Poldark’s ‘dark side’ after controversial episode

The actor gives his opinion on this week's supposed rape scene

Aidan Turner has defended his character Ross Poldark’s dark side, after this week’s controversial episode.

The Dubliner landed the role in 2015, and with the show in the middle of it’s second season – it has been subject to some criticism.

“The so-called dark side of Ross is very real and it’s what makes him such a fascinating character,” he said.

The 33-year-old admitted that he thinks it’s important to show Ross’ good and bad side.

“He does some noble and admirable things but also some reckless, thoughtless crass and downright stupid things,” he told the Irish Sun.

“We have a 21st Century scriptwriter who is dramatising a 1940s/50s take on a 18th century character.”

“My job is to bring to life the character as written in the script. I think what attracted Debbie Horsfield to the character of Ross are his flaws and complexities, things that also attracted me.”

“Ross’s contradictions and complexities are as compelling now as they would have been in the 18th Century.”

The actor also talked about a scene in the latest episode where his character seemingly rapes Elizabeth.

“Audiences will have seen it by now and will be able to make up their own mind.

“However, the scene should be viewed in the context of scenes that come before and after it,” he added.

“It’s not an incident that can be taken out of context.”
