Vogue Williams calls for online trolling to be made a crime in Ireland

Vogue Williams has called for online trolling to be made a crime in Ireland.

The 31-year-old, who has received death threats from online bullies, doesn’t think she should accept abuse just because she’s a celebrity.

Writing in her Sunday World column, Vogue wrote, “Internet trolling is online bullying by a person that would be too afraid to say it to your face.”

“I often get told that I should get used to it and it comes with the territory of what I do, but why should I just accept that?”

“I’ve been fat-shamed, sent death threats and called plenty of names, but for me that should be acceptable because I work in the public eye? I don’t think so.”

“Under no circumstances should abuse like that be acceptable, and finally internet trolls – based in the UK at least – will face prosecution for any hate-filled abusive online behaviour in the same way they would if they had abused people in the street,” Vogue explained.

“New laws have now been proposed to crack down on online hate speech in the UK and I believe it’s time these guidelines were introduced in Ireland.

“I think, with the way things are going regarding social media, it is a necessary step to protect everyone.
“It’s the same with revenge porn, again something that was non existent before the days of the internet, which has become a big problem,” she added.

Vogue is gearing up to front three new documentaries for RTÉ, on sugar daddies, anxiety, and single parenthood.
