Paul Mescal admits he felt ‘objectified’ following the success of Normal People

The Irish actor said he receives some "intense" DMs on Instagram

Paul Mescal has admitted he felt “objectified” following the success of Normal People.

The 24-year-old shot to fame back in May, after he played Connell Waldron in the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s popular novel.

The series received worldwide acclaim, and Paul even scooped an Emmy nomination for his performance – but the show’s success has had some negative aspects too.

Speaking to ELLE magazine, Paul said: “I felt objectified after Normal People. It’s to be expected, given the intimacy of my scenes, but it doesn’t make it easier.”

“I daren’t read some of the intense DMs I receive. But it’s not enough to put me off the industry.”

The Maynooth native also admitted the obsession with his character’s chain was “a bit frightening”.

“The power of Connell’s chain was completely unexpected. And a bit frightening! It became this totemic being that lived outside the show,” he added.

On the latest episode of Goss Chats, Goss.ie Founder Ali Ryan chats to Lucy Kennedy about the big changes coming to Living With Lucy this season.

Plus the top TV presenter opens up about her new book, home schooling and how she’s been presenting her radio show from home.
