Nancy Ashmawy: ‘I worked on Christmas – but it was still a happy time’

Her son Baz Ashmawy didn't celebrate the festive holiday when he lived in Egypt

Baz Ashmawy’s mother Nancy Ashmawy has revealed that she would work on Christmas Day – but she still remembers the time as happy.

The presenter and his mother are very close and their show 50 Ways To Kill Your Mammies has just wrapped up for the final time on Sky 1 this year.

“I worked most Christmases but that said I always remember them being very happy times,” she said.

The reality show star admitted that her son didn’t receive many presents at Christmas and they would have to swap presents on Christmas Eve, but Baz was happy.

“The presents – okay, he got one or two but that was it and he was happy,” she told the Irish Daily Mail.

“I would go out and get the tree and we would put it up together. I have very fond memories.

“Usually we would have our dinner Christmas Eve and do the presents then. Usually I would be out at work and then he would come down and get his presents.

“Earlier on his granny, my mother, lived with us. She would look after him during the day and then I would be home at maybe 5pm and it was very nice and I always loved Christmas.”

The father-of-six also admitted that he never celebrated Christmas when he lived in Egypt, but he didn’t miss out because he didn’t know what it was until he came to Ireland.

“My earliest memory is probably about when I was seven because I was in Egypt where we didn’t celebrate Christmas that much for obvious reasons,” Baz explained.

“When I came back I was about six or seven and that was when Christmas really started for me.

“When I got to Ireland, it was amazing because it was like discovering chocolate, to be honest, and I couldn’t believe they had hidden it from me for so long.

“Back then they didn’t celebrate Christmas in Egypt. I think they do now as a festival but back then it wasn’t really a thing and you don’t miss what you don’t know so it wasn’t a thing.”
