Keith Duffy: 'It will be nerve-wracking putting together a play in JUST 24 hours'

Keith Duffy has revealed performing on stage in The Abbey Theatre is a very “nerve-wracking” process.

The Dubliner will star in the upcoming 24 Hours Play performance alongside the likes of Shane Byrne, Aoibhinn McGinty and Lawrence Kinlan.

While Keith is used to performing on stage with Boyzone, playing a character on stage will set the boybander out of his comfort zone.

He said: “It is nerve wracking, I don’t care how good of an actor you are, it is nerve wracking to get your lines handed to you and knowing that you’re on our national theatre, The Abbey.”

The singer also revealed that the actors’ characters were especially developed for them based on things that they had never done before on stage.

He said: “You’ve got six writiers, six directors and the background crew. Everyone works completely voluntary.

“At 9 o’clock on Saturday night 31st of January, we all sat around in a circle, everybody stands up and says who they are, what they’ve done, what they haven’t done on stage.”

He continued: “You stand up and go ‘Hello, I’m Keith Duffy, I was in a band once. I like to act and I’ve never played a person with tourettes on stage or I’ve never cried on stage’ and it goes around the whole room and then the writers get their ideas for the play.”

“Through the night they write their 15 minute play and pick roughly five actors each” he told The Ian Dempsey Show on Today FM.

The pop star also admitted that while he sticks to a healthy diet most of the time, he does relax a little more on the weekends.

“Monday to Friday I try to keep my diet quite clean and train three to four times a week. Saturday and Sunday, I eat and drink everything that moves” he laughed.

“Life is for living, I enjoy a couple of pints and a kebab at the end of the night, but not Monday-Friday, it’s a good balance.”
