Irish singing legend Val Doonican dies aged 88

Legendary singer Val Doonican has died aged 88.

The Irish entertainer died peacefully in his home in Buckinghamshire with his daughter revealing that he wasn’t sick but “his batteries had just ran out.”

Val rose to fame in the 1960s when he fronted his own BBC series The Val Doonican Show which ran from 1965 to 1986.

The showbiz veteran released several albums and was rarely out of the UK charts during the 60s and 70s with hits like Walk Tall and Elusive Butterfly.

The Waterford native retired from performing in 2009 and was granted the Freedom of Waterford two years later.

Val is survived by his wife Lynn, daughters Sarah and Fiona and grandchildren Bethany and Scott.
