Irish playwright Brian Friel passes away aged 86

Brian Friel's 80th birthday at The Abbey Theatre

Illustrious Irish playwright Brian Friel passed away on Friday morning at the age of 86.

Best known for plays including Philadelphia, Here I Come! and Dancing at Lughnasa – he was considered one of the greatest English-language dramatists of our time.

He wrote 30 plays over the course of his impressive career and earned several Tony Awards over the years, receiving the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Play in 1992.

The writer was born in Omagh, Co Tyrone in 1929 and attended St Clumb’s College in Derry which was also attended by Seamus Heaney, John Hume, Phil Coulter and Paul Brady.

Brian passed away peacefully at his home in Donegal on Friday morning and is survived by wife Anne, four daughters and his son.
