Gay Byrne: ‘I told my listeners I have cancer so they would avoid rumours’

The broadcaster has been diagnosed with cancer

Gay Byrne has revealed that he publicly told his RTE listeners that he has cancer so they would avoid any rumours spreading about him.

The Dubliner announced on his Lyric FM show that he’s been diagnosed with prostate cancer and he would be off air next week as he’ll be in hospital.

“I was stating it to my listeners to avoid any rumours or talk,” he said.

Gay admitted that nothing has been confirmed yet about his health and he doesn’t know the extent of it.

“I said [on my show] that I have to go into hospital for more tests – I could have a touch of prostate cancer,” he told the Irish Independent.

“Nothing has been confirmed, I will know more at the end of the week. I don’t know anything further at the moment, that’s the extent of it. I am hoping it will be ok.”
