Daithí Ó Sé opens up about about frightening cancer scare and how it ‘changed’ him

Daithí Ó Sé has opened up about his cancer scare last year.

The presenter previously found a lump above his eyebrow, which at first he thought was an ingrown hair, but turned out to be cancer.

He confessed to RSVP: “When you get news like that, it does straighten you up.”

In 2023, Daithí was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, a common type of skin cancer which gave him the kick he needed to make changes in his life regarding his health.

He said: “I got a bit of a fright when I found a lump in my eyebrow. I thought I had an ingrown hair, but it turned out to be cancerous. I got it cut out and I moved on.”

“The doctor said that she got it all out, and a bit around it just to be sure. When you get news like that it does straighten you up.”

“I also have to mind my cholesterol and my weight. I always feel the benefits when I go to the gym and it’s up to me to push myself a bit more.

“It’s a lot easier to do it at this time of year,” he added.

The RTÉ presenter also admitted that he has become more focused on his health as he gets closer to 50.

He said: “I’ll be 50 in two years time and now that I say it out loud I realise that I need to really start minding myself. You don’t have to turn your life upside down, but there are simple tweaks you can do.”

Daithi continued: “Your head needs to be in the right place as well. Socialising is very important and I go to meet my buddies for a couple of hours every second week or so.”

“It’s also important to be home with the family and to be able to do absolutely nothing if you want to.”
