Conor McGregor one step closer to fighting Floyd Mayweather

The two may finally go head-to-head

Conor McGregor is one step closer to fighting Floyd Mayweather now that he has obtained a boxing license.

Floyd has retired from MMA and professional boxing but there is talk he may come back just to fight Conor.

For the Crumlin native to take on the American, he needed to obtain a boxing license to fight.

Brett Okamoto, a MMA reporter for ESPN’s 5ive Rounds, announced the news on Twitter.

“Confirmed with California State Athletic Commission that Conor McGregor has been issued a boxing license as of today,” he wrote.

Despite the huge advancement, there is one complication that may prevent the 28-year-old taking on Floyd – Conor is still contracted to the UFC and can’t fight outside of the federation.

“It’s all a game. It’s all a calculated effort to gain more fans,” CEO of Mayweather Promotions, Leonard Ellerbe, told ESPN.

“He got a boxing license. Congratulations to him. Conor McGregor can say anything he wants to, but he is under contract to the UFC, and if he wanted to fight Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match, he can’t because his bosses wouldn’t allow that to happen.

“They would never let him step into a boxing ring with Floyd Mayweather because everyone knows what the outcome would be. He would get his ass beat from pillar to post.”
