Cillian Murphy slams Ron DeSantis campaign for using clips of him in anti-LGBTQ video

Cillian Murphy and the team behind Peaky Blinders have condemned an anti-LGBTQ campaign video shared by supporters of Florida governor Ron DeSantis.

It features clips of Cillian’s character Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders, which were obtained “without permission or official license”.

The video, shared by DeSantis’ campaign on Twitter, slams his rival 2024 presidential candidate Donald Trump for vowing to “protect our LGBTQ citizens.”

The video also mocks Trump for supporting transgender women, and boasts about DeSantis’ legislative attacks against LGBTQ people.

A joint statement from Cillian and show creator Steven Knight, Caryn Mandabach Productions, Tiger Aspect Productions and Banijay Rights said they “strongly disapprove” of the video.

They said: “On behalf of the partners of Peaky Blinders… we confirm the footage of Tommy Shelby’s character used within the video posted by Ron DeSantis’ campaign was obtained without permission or official licence.”

“We do not support nor endorse the video’s narrative and strongly disapprove of the use of the content in this manner.”
