Cecelia Ahern admits failed record deal kickstarted her career as an author

Cecelia Ahern has admitted that her failed record deal spurred on her career as an author.

Believe it or not, the bestselling author once aspired to be a singer and entered the Euro Song contest back in 2000 with girl group Shimma after being signed by a record company – but unfortunately landed in third place.

“That was the year 2000 and we were called Shimma, and that was for the Euro Song it wasn’t even for the Eurovision,” she told her brother-in-law Nicky Byrne and Jenny Greene on 2FM.

“But we were awful, like the four of us together were so bad.

“I remember we got a record deal, we had a choreographer… and they really had high hopes for us and then we came third and then everyone just disappeared.

“We came third, the Millennium song won that year and we should have known, we should have known better,”she laughed.

Despite the disappointment at the time, the pay off from losing the record deal actually paid for Cecelia’s college fees at Griffith College where she studied Journalism and Media Communications – which led to her career as a writer.

“They paid us off, the record company, to get rid of us and that money paid my way through college.

“They paid like a small figure, but it was great for that age because I was like 18/19.

“I think I was in first or second year in college so, you know its good that it didn’t work out because it made me really put my head down and concentrate and I thought ‘okay, get on with your life’.

“Look I loved it at the time, but I’m kind of glad it didn’t work out because I’ve found something that I feel more passionate about,” she admitted.
