Colm Hayes: ‘2FM DJs over 40 should be looking over their shoulder’

Colm Hayes has warned older DJs in 2FM to be watch out in case they get replaced by a younger presenter.

The 54-year-old announced he would be leaving the radio station in a press release yesterday, and now he’s warning other 2FM stars to watch their backs.

“At the moment, 2FM are chasing a new younger audience and believe having a veteran DJ on air might put kids off switching over,” he revealed.

Colm admitted that 2FM are happy to lose the older audience but can’t get the younger audience in quick enough to replace them.

“So I think any DJ in 2FM now who is over 40 should be looking over their shoulder,” he told The Irish Sun.

“It seems 2FM are burning off the older audience but can’t recruit the younger audience quick enough to replace them.

“That’s why they’ve seen a wobble in the past year. Only time will tell if they can do it.”

Colm further admitted that he is not retiring but just looking for a more mature style.

“I’m not retiring. I love radio and being who I am but I need to step into a more mature style of broadcasting,” he added.

Al Porter is tipped to replace the veteran DJ on his weekend morning slot.
