Hozier: 'I NEVER thought Irish radio would be turned on by my music'

Rising star Hozier has admitted he never expected his meteoric rise to fame – as he always expected to be a “very, very obscure artist”.

The Bray singer has seen himself nominated for a Grammy and become a worldwide name after the release of Take Me To Church.

But the 24-year-old – who has friends in Taylor Swift – didn’t even expect Irish radio to want to play his songs, let alone stations around the world.

He said: “I always thought of myself as a very, very obscure artist. I never thought Irish radio would be turned on by my music — or any f **king radio station, excuse my French.

“I’m still trying to figure out what’s happening. I never wrote music for the mainstream. I think I was incredibly fortunate that the song [Take Me To Church] crossed over and people connected with it.

“Spotify played a big role. It’s a discovery platform and it’s been invaluable to me over the past year.”

Unexpected: Hozier didn’t expect fame

And Hozier, who next week will perform with Annie Lennox at the Grammy Awards, told Rolling Stone that he won’t have any new music until at least 2016.

He said: “Sadly, I’m too busy to work on my second album in any meaningful way. But I have a guitar with me everywhere I go and I’ll try to keep the ideas coming.

“I just won’t be able to do any meaningful work until 2016, I think. We’ve just had some fantastic offers this year and we don’t want to pull any punches. We’re really going for it.”
