Michael Fassbender nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the British Independent Film awards

Michael Fassbender has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the British Independent Film awards – and will be battling Andrew Scott.

The Kerry man is up for the award for his role in Frank – where he plays an eccentric pop musician who refuses to take off a paper mache head.

But he is up against  Brendan Gleeson for Calvary, Andrew Scott and Ben Schnetzer, both for Pride; Rafe Spall for X+Y and Sean Harris for ’71.

Frank, which was filmed in Ireland, has received five nominations in total at the cinema awards which promote independently funded filmmaking.

Co-star Maggie Gyllenhaal is nominated for Best Supporting Actress, while Lenny Abrahamson gets the nod for Best Director.

Delighted Abrahamson said: “I’m delighted for everyone involved in Frank that it’s getting such an endorsement from the BIFA and honoured to be nominated for Best Director.”

While ’71, which is set in Belfast, gets nine nominations including Best British Independent Film.

From the film, Jack O’Connell is up for Best Actor and Sean Harris is nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

The winners will be announced on Sunday 7 December in central London.
