Jamie Dornan: 'There's an element of me that's fractured from losing my mother so young'

Jamie Dornan has admitted that losing his mother at 16 to pancreatic cancer was a factor in him signing on to 50 Shades of Grey.

The Northern Irish actor took the place of Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam after he dropped out to play the lead role in the film adaptation of erotic bestseller.

And talking about how his mother’s death influenced his decision to play the complex character – the 32-year-old said it had to do with “an attraction and understanding I have for people that are broken in some way.”

“Not that I’m some broken bird, but there’s a massive element of me that’s fractured from losing my mother so young, and I’m drawn to characters who are wounded,” he said.

In the anticipated release, Jamie plays Christian Grey who to the outside world appears to be a handsome twenty something billionaire who in reality hides his emotionally distant dark side and secretly practices BDSM.

Talking to Details magazine, the former Calvin Klein model admitted to the magazine that he couldn’t relate to certain aspects of the character.

“Christian’s wild level of achievement and success at such a young age…Christian’s power—I don’t really have any.”

The Belfast born actor has been vocal about his research for his role at a Vancouver S&M dungeon while he didn’t participate he did reveal he found it intriguing.

“Even if you didn’t have Christian’s history of childhood abuse and abandonment, I totally understand why a person would be into it,” he said.

“Something like trainspotting or planespotting? I actually don’t get that. But I do understand the psychology of being tied up and getting turned on.”
