Bob Saget’s family sue officials to block the release of death investigation records

The family of the late comedian Bob Saget are suing officials to block the release of records from the investigation into his death.

The Full House star was found dead on January 9 in his hotel room, just hours after he performed a stand-up gig in Florida.

The 65-year-old’s wife Kelly Rizzo and the couple’s three daughters are now taking legal action to protect his legacy.

According to court documents obtained by E! News, “certain news and media outlets have filed or plan to file public records requests” and the family is requesting an injunction to keep those materials confidential.

Lawyers representing the family said in the suit that Kelly and her daughters will “suffer irreparable harm in the form of extreme mental pain, anguish, and emotional distress” if officials release records of their investigation to either the public or the press.

Citing their privacy rights, the family is asking the court to grant a declaratory relief so that the records can remain “confidential and exempt from disclosure under Florida law.”

Brian Bieber, an attorney representing the Saget family, told E! News in a statement on Tuesday: “In order to protect the Saget family’s privacy, today on their behalf, I filed for an injunction to prevent the disclosure of any photographs or videos of Mr. Saget made by the authorities during their investigation.”

Though “facts of the investigation should be made public,” the lawyer said that any materials gathered during the investigation into Bob’s death “should remain private out of respect for the dignity of Mr. Saget and his family.”

He added: “It’s very simple—from a human and legal standpoint—the Saget family’s privacy rights outweigh any public interest in disclosure of this sensitive information.”

It comes one week after Bob’s family revealed his cause of death was a head trauma.

They wrote in a statement: “In the weeks since Bob’s passing, we have been overwhelmed with the incredible outpouring of love from Bob’s fans, which has been a great comfort to us and for which we are eternally grateful.”

“Now that we have the final conclusions from the authorities’ investigation, we felt it only proper that the fans hear those conclusions directly from us. They have concluded that he accidentally hit the back of his head on something, thought nothing of it and went to sleep. No drugs or alcohol were involved.”

The statement concluded: “As we continue to mourn together, we ask everyone to remember the love and laughter that Bob brought to this world, and the lessons he taught us all: to be kind to everyone, to let the people you love know you love them, and to face difficult times with hugs and laughter.”

Bob was best known for playing Danny Tanner on the sitcom Full House, and for narrating How I Met Your Mother as the future Ted Mosby.

The actor is survived by his wife Kelly, and his daughters Aubrey, 34, Lara, 32, and Jennifer, 29 – whom he shared with his ex-wife Sherri Kramer.
