EXCLUSIVE! Brendan Courtney reveals: 'I'm really nervous about the marriage equality referendum'

Brendan Courtney has revealed he’s “very nervous” about the upcoming marriage equality referendum.

The TV star told Goss.ie he will be flying home from London to vote on May 22 to cast his yes vote.

“I’m not sure if it will pass, I’m very nervous. We’re working hard, I’m part of a group of people, No Less No More is our organisation,” he said.

“I’m doing anything I can do to encourage people to Vote Yes and I really hope it passes. I will be very disappointed in our country if it doesn’t pass.”

“As a nation, we are used to being disappointed when it comes to issues that are put forward to a public vote – with the divorce and abortion issues, I have been very disappointed with those outcomes.”

The Off The Rails presenter who recently launched One4All’s new fundraising initiative #Shop4Crumlin in aid of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital – thinks the outcome could be a close call but he’s quick to give his true feelings on the Vote No campaign.

“The No side sounds stupid everytime we hear them talk. They sound irrational, they sound ill-informed,” he told Goss.ie.

“I was bullied at school, you know the kid who’s a little bit light in his loafers and he can’t help it that he’s a little bit different. There’s always those kids and I was one of those kids.”

“But no matter what, if the law says that I am equal to those bullies – that will filter through eventually into society and that reason to bully will be filtered out.”

If the referendum does pass, Brendan is in no rush to get married – however he can definitely see himself tying the knot one day.

“I think yes, I would like to celebrate my relationship in front of my family some day and if that involves doing what my sisters did, I would like the right to do that,” he said.

“I’m very much in love and I want the option – I’m just waiting on the ring!”
