Aidan Turner nominated for MAJOR award

Aidan Turner has been nominated for a National Television Award for his turn as the lead in BBC drama Poldark.

The Hobbit actor, who became a heartthrob overnight with his period role, has been nominated for Best Drama Performance.

However the Tallaght native will face stiff competition against David Tennant in Broadchurch, Sheridan Smith in Black Work and Suranne Jones in Doctor Foster.

The 32-year-old’s show Poldark is also shortlisted in the Best New Drama category alongside Ordinary Lies, Doctor Foster and Humans.

Meanwhile Dublin actor Allen Leech’s show Downton Abbey has been nominated in the Best Drama category against Broadchurch, Casualty and Doctor Who.

Also fighting for an award on the night is Graham Norton who has been shortlisted for two honours, Best TV Presenter and Best Entertainment Programme for his BBC chat show.

Voting is open at nationaltvawards.com with the winners announced on January 20.
