Michael D Higgins has been officially re-elected as President of Ireland

Michael D Higgins has officially been re-elected as President of Ireland.

It has been revealed that he won 822,566 first preferences, that’s 55.8% of the vote.

Peter Casey came in second while Liadh Ní Riada, Joan Freeman, Sean Gallagher and Gavin Duffy all followed.

Although the election had a seriously low turnout with only 1,492,338 people voting, there was still cause to celebrate as President Higgins took back his position with pride.

In his acceptance speech, Higgins said he was happy to return as President of the people.

“People have made a choice as to which version of Irishness they prefer… I will be a President for all of the people.”
